    Stone Garwood – Magenta Placenta

    CD Review by Brooke Mason

Stone Garwood is self described as alternative rock and his music is all original improv. His influences include Garuda, PFunk, Melanie Safka, Billy Preston and specifically 100% Acid Jazz. If you like acid jazz you may get a kick out of Magenta Placenta. The Hoodlimp of Limriosity sounds like an experiment in track editing. It reminded me of the movie Contact; floating through space hearing tons of radio transmissions traveling through time. Playing with multi-tracks on single tracks seems to be a good option for getting all your little ditties recorded and has also been done by the likes of They Might Be Giants on their album Apollo 13.

Garwood’s lead guitar instrumentals sound as though they are being played as a recording is playing in the background on Barking Moon Shadows and Hunt-kun Leviathan The Hungry Last Dinosaur. The reason for this is Steve has recorded all of these songs with audio tapes and Garageband! All of the instrumental tracks, vocals and lyrics are improvised. Prone Drone, Block Serve 3 and the title track are definitely trippy, with dissonant chords and stream of consciousness verse somehow reminiscent of the watered out vocals of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s Lady of the Island. Lyrically, Threeandropold is the most successful freeform verse. They are open to interpretation but seem to be about the love for a woman who is either physically or mentally too short to reach the storyteller for a kiss and the willingness of the storyteller to wait for the time when she is able to reach. It is in this same song that the Celts are amusingly referred to as being a short race, seemingly an allusion to leprechauns.

Garwood does not have any formal training nor can he afford his own instruments, but he does have a passion that is apparent from this compilation. Wind plays with the speaker sound going back and forth so there is some mixing experimentation here, and this one is well done. If We and Threeandropold sounded like reversed tracks and are psychedelic to be sure. Sungun makes nice use of guitar filters. Amofromun and San Miguel could benefit from being recorded again to get better sound levels. The melody lines are promising and cleaned up I could see them as being very evocative background music for film or television.

    Ann Parenti – As Promised
    CD Review by Brooke Mason

As Promised was inspired by A Course In Miracles, a self-study book published by The Foundation for Inner Peace that emphasizes practical applications of forgiveness in daily living. Ten years in the making, Ann has finally recorded these twelve songs inspired by her studies for this album.

Guitar and piano are the base for most of these worship songs. Ann has a lovely deep voice that has been compared to Helen Reddy and Ann Murray. Ann’s version of Amazing Grace and her original track, The Kingdom of God, have been categorized by the artist as folk-jazz. That really comes through on The Sight of Christ. Holy Spirit has an uplifting piano composition and melody. The title track is a ballad with electric guitar in the mix. The instrumental version of Kingdom of God is an interesting blend of sitar and didgeridoo sounds.

A percentage of the price of this album will be evenly distributed and donated to A Place For Miracles and The Susan G. Koman Fund.

    Linda Bonadies – Karma

    CD Review By Brooke Mason

Songsalive! member Linda Bonadies’ latest album Karma is her second release following her 2004 debut No Regret. The upbeat title track sucks you in with a joyful message of becoming a self fulfilling prophecy by putting positive energy out into the universe. Also what stands out here, and throughout this album, is Linda’s gift of composition garnered at Bucknell University and Hartt School of Music. Linda’s musical knowledge comes through in her breakdown structures on songs like Karma and The Flow. My favorite track on this album is Stir Crazy with its highly skilled minor chord compositions that fit the lyrical theme.

Vocally I would compare Bonadies more to Carly Simon than Carole King. Linda’s vocal delivery is consistent throughout the album. Lyrically as well, I find the comparisons more akin to the emotional rawness of Carly Simon’s Itsy Bitsy Spider. Linda’s lyrics allude to a lifetime of garnered wisdom on songs like Lead With Your Heart and Take Nothing For Granted. The best representation of Linda’s writing skills on this album is The Flow.  After comparing a fish swimming against a river and a bird flying against the wind as a metaphor for the struggle of humanity and acceptance of the nature of life, Bonadies assures us that, “There’s no need to fight because the flow will take you through your life…”

Runaway Train, Hold Me and The Way It Is definitely have that Been to Canaan style percussion. Male harmonizing is used to great effect on songs like Lead With Your Heart and You, a sassy little jazz number somehow reminiscent of Millie Small.

Songsalive! member Bonnie Lee Panda is basing herself in Nashville for a few months and we would like to help her do some co-writing. Her
Nashville blog link is www.BonnieLeePanda.wordpress.com/.  Reach out to her directly!

    Here's what Bonnie Lee says:

My name is Bonnie Lee Panda and I just moved to Nashville 3 weeks ago from Connecticut.  I'm having a fabulous time already meeting people and singing/writing as often as I can.  I'm interested in meeting other co-writers, so here's a little bout me as an artist/writer, and if you're interested in writing, email me at BonnieLeePanda@aol.com

I'm very drawn to the family–oriented, storytelling, rootsy "Americana" tradition of country music, however I'm open to writing all types of music. A lot of my songs reflect on spirituality, love, family, recovery, everyday humor, finding one’s truth and enjoying life’s journey.  I enjoy writing both melody and lyrics, however I think my strength is in melody writing (I can write in person or through Skype too)!

As a performer, I play at coffeehouses and cafe’s, as well as at shelters, benefits for recovery and women centers and hunger and homelessness awareness.  In addition, I bring musical workshops to third to eighth graders, covering important topics like self-esteem, respect and anti-bullying.

    Best,
    Bonnie Lee

Hornig Album Cover.JPGThomas Hornig - All Of My Life
    Review by Brooke Mason

All Of My Life won the 2008 ASCAPlus Pop Award, and deservedly so. This solo debut release features singer/songwriter Thomas Hornig, a Los Angeles based producer/engineer and founder of Tomcat on the Prowl Productions. Hornig has been producing and collaborating with artists for over two decades including Deanna Pino, Marc Platt and most recently Jennifer Quiroz.

All Of My Life features quality production; layering strings, synth, piano, and primarily guitar into pop rock songs that recall Phil Collins, mostly as a solo artist and not the progressive rock that came out of Genesis. The similarities really come through on the vocals with great doubled harmonies on the title track, Your Name and Breathe In. Hornig has been compared previously to Phil Collins and Christopher Cross. This is an accurate appraisal on songs like Say It's Love. I’d also compare Hornig vocally to David Crosby on songs like Alone and Almost Everyday.

The guitar work veers sometimes on folk rock with finger picking and slide guitar on tracks like Worth Fighting For, Fallen and No Ordinary Thing. And although there are shades of Americana at play, the emphasis is on pop rock. Songs like Melody and Everything Else Came Through are more comparable to melodic alternative rock hits by The Rembrandts and Toad The Wet Sprocket.

    Based in
Long Beach, California, Susan Picking performs in the greater Los Angeles area. The CD Down in Your Soul is Picking’s first release; she is currently working on production of a forthcoming cd. Susan’s song Why? was featured on the SongsAlive! 2009 Compilation CD. Her song Wonder in The Wander which is to appear on her pending release garnered 2nd place in the RiverFolk Festival in Manchester Michigan over the summer.

Picking performs traditional Irish music and has previously performed as a singer with the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. Her Irish heritage drew Picking to the study of traditional Celtic music and sean-nós singing. The track Let’s is a lovely acapella chorus.

Picking’s influences include Carole King, and you could hear those influences on the piano oriented folk songs like Down In Your Soul, I Pray and Little Bua. And like Carole King, Susan Picking isn’t afraid to jump genres. The Constant Light and Revolving Door surprise with more of a bluegrass and Americana feel that is totally fun. Sideways and No Mistake are more of the jazz folk similar to Jewel or Ricky Lee Jones.

Down In Your Soul is mostly jazz piano oriented. The instrumentation is primarily piano, with a few cello tracks as Susan is classically trained in piano and cello which you can hear on the track Namaste. If you are a fan of Carole King or Ricky Lee Jones you will enjoy the sounds of Susan Picking.

    A Songwriter’s Collage
is a shout out to the Nashville A&R to get this singer/songwriter a publishing deal or at least a contract! CJ’s story is an inspiration. Putting herself through school to become a nurse, while nursing the love and passion for music all the while. I listened to A Songwriter’s Collage, with tracks sung by CJ Borden as well as some male vocalists. Borden is gifted enough to be able to write for others on tracks like 21st Century Fox, American Skies and Sam, but she can definitely hold her own.

I kept thinking Vanessa Williams. Borden has a very classic voice and on songs like Do Again, a beautiful piano driven ballad, I could imagine Borden going on to write and sing romantic movie soundtrack numbers. Yes, she sounds that good and as a songwriter she knows how to cater to an audience and the radio. For example, her track Louis Vuitton is chock-full of pop culture references which would market well in the modern country era of bands like Big & Rich. She could also hold her own against Carrie Underwood’s hit Before He Cheats with her angst driven spurned love song Kissed Me Goodbye and her “Dear John” ballad It Never Crossed My Mind. Borden definitely has an understanding of the current country market and how to appeal to this patriotic fan base; Shine is about a soldier.

American Skies is more in the Bruce Springsteen vein, starting in with some harmonica and accordion, with lyrics about farming in Nebraska. Borden knows how to pull all those emotional heart strings a lah Loretta Lynn with her tender understanding of the human condition on songs like the piano based empty nest ballad Cherished One and Sam, about a homeless man in Vegas down on his luck. Here is where you really see Borden’s lyrical prowess come through strongest: “When neon diamonds shine on him tonight/make him feel invincible again/last roll of the dice/one more card/one last vice/fate can deal a lousy hand/just like Sam.”

These are very radio friendly songs and Borden is definitely doing it right by collaborating and marketing her material. The singer/songwriter believes A Songwriter's Collage will help her make a better pitch for her songs. Borden says, "It includes a lot of variety. Even though my first love is country I have these pop and rock and Christian songs too, so I have a lot of variety in my writing." Christian, pop and country? It worked for Amy Grant!

CJ Borden has performed at the Tennessee State Fair and the world-famous Bluebird Café and resides in Las Vegas where she continues to write pop, country and rock, and is currently looking for performing opportunities.
